R.I.P. FATKAT 1999 - 2009

Well folks, that was fun.

Roughly 10 years ago a few of us Helix Animation in Halifax (Not to be confused with Richard's Company in Sydney) left the studio to form Fatkat Animation Studios, at the time we were producing flash animated training films for a client in San Diego.

In 2002 Fatkat was taken over and redubbed Trainingscape Studios Canada by our client. Then about a year later it folded leaving us in the crapper and due 2 weeks back pay. Most of that great team went to other studios in Halifax or spread out farther west. The CEO was never heard from again and we never did get our cashola. Oh well, we moved on.

In 2003 a few of us ex Training-Apes decided to raise Fatkat out of the ashes and focus on TV. We got our start with a nice reference from Ian Gallant, who referred Fatkat to a PEI producer by the name of Campbell Webster. He had a contract that saw us launch Fatkat in NB and produce the first animated series in the province for CBC. I'm thankful that I was able to repay Ian for that reference with a spot on the Happy Tree Friends series years later. So thank you again Ian and thank you Campbell for getting us started again.

Alot of stuff has happened in the 10 years that the Fatkat brand has been kicking around, though mostly all in the last half. We've produced simply a ton of commercials and interactive spots. We've cranked out series such as Skunk Fu!, Chaotic, SuperNormal and of course the straw that broke the camel's back "Three Delivery".

Don't get me wrong, all were good productions, but Three Delivery was the monster, some called it a studio killer (you were right Rick!), I just giggled it off, but I knew they were right. It'd be a miracle if we came out of that one alive. Though it certainly beat the hell out of us all, we made it though. With all 26 episodes delivered to YTV and the other broadcasters just last week. I thank the entire TD crew for that, you did what many could not, you survived the most demanding and torturous production I have ever seen and did it with a smile, albeit a few teeth are missing from your smile; my heart goes out and my hat comes off to you. I'm very proud of the work Fatkat produced and Three Delivery is an awesome show because of it.

Extra big thank yoos to Robbie Anderson & Tavis Silbernagel for making it shine and staying committed through all of it. A massive thank you to Stephen Ashe and Carol MacKinley to cleaning it all up in finance, insuring that everyone was paid in full. It was no small task and you did it all with grace and humility. I thank you.

To the hundreds of other great artists, people, partners and clients that have made Fatkat a great company over the years and put up with all the bullshit when we were growing like mad; thanks for still making it fun with cool projects, a heartfelt thanks.

As for the future, I have gathered a few close friends from Fatkat and will be starting a new studio here on the Miramichi. It will be called "Loogaroo" . We'll be reflecting on all we did right, but also all that we lost sight of or totally messed up on. Then retooling our new shop and providing the same great service that we did for so long with Fatkat but with some mighty big changes and improvements.

We'll be looking to put the finest ex-Fatkat artists to work as quickly as possible. I urge you all to reach out early and often to keep top of mind. Thank you for staying in the area and for your loyalty to me and Miramichi. We're by no means done yet, as a matter of fact, we're just getting started!

I'm off to spend some much needed time with my family, again thank you for 10 glorious years with Fatkat. I look forward to many more as Loogaroo.

Film producer says N.B. government losing millions by ignoring industry

New Brunswick is losing out on millions of dollars in potential revenue because the Liberal government is ignoring the film industry, says a film producer in Moncton.

Rick LeGuerrier, a co-owner of Dream Street Pictures, said other provinces realize the value of supporting film and television productions and that translates into more money for local economies.

"They'll give us $100,000, $200,000 in a project and they're an equity investor and if that project is sold and makes money after the fact, we have to return some of that money to the provincial coffers and in fact we've done that with some of our projects," LeGuerrier said in an interview on Friday.

LeGuerrier was involved in the making of Sticks and Stones, an award-winning film about a hockey team of young Americans booed in Montreal then invited to a tournament in Fredericton to atone for the poor treatment they'd received.

LeGuerrier said the film made about the incident showed the impact a film production can have.

"Over the course of a couple of months, we spent between two to three million dollars in the New Brunswick economy and particularly in Fredericton," LeGuerrier said.

"And if you look at a very conservative multiplier effect of that, even if you double it, which is really conservative when it comes to economic multipliers, you're looking at about $5 million which was spent over a couple of months in the Fredericton economy."

Sticks and Stones won the 2009 Shaw Rocket Prize, a $50,000 prize that recognizes the best Canadian television programming for youth aged 13-17, on Wednesday.

Sticks and Stones also won Best Foreign Feature Drama at the International Family Film Festival in 2008 and earned Gemini and Canadian Film and Television Production Association Indie Award nominations.

Dear Fatkats,

Now that animation has just wrapped at the Fatkat studio we wanted to take the opportunity to send out a big thank you to the entire FK crew for all their hard work on Three Delivery! It has been a long and challenging road, but in the end we have created an amazing show that we should all be extremely proud of.

It is no small feat to have completed two seasons worth of a traditional style show in flash considering the limited amount of time and people that we had on board. It is truly a testament to the hard working production staff and artists at Fatkat that we were able to make such a great-looking show that is now set to air on more than 6 international broadcast channels from the UK to Australia.

So thank you all for all the late nights, working weekends, and trudging through the cold Miramichi snow (which hasn’t stopped yet, I hear!). The show absolutely couldn’t have done without your hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to this project.

$310 million fund to replace CTF

Federal heritage minister James Moore, on the Toronto set of Flashpoint to announce the scrapping of the Canadian Television Fund, joked that cast member Enrico Colantoni promised not to lob a grenade in his direction if he said something disagreeable.

Turns out the minister lobbed a few grenades of his own on Monday, as he outlined Ottawa's fix for TV financing: to support more ratings-driven Canadian content on more digital platforms with a new $310 million Canada Media Fund.

Moore said the CTF and the digital-oriented Canadian New Media Fund will be collapsed into the CMF by April 2010.

Ottawa will contribute no new money to the replacement fund, putting in $134.7 million with the rest coming from domestic cable and satellite TV providers.

Moore said he wants to see content funded by the CMF streaming on the internet and mobile platforms.

"The future is digital," said the 32 year-old minister, himself an avid iPod watcher.

Applicants to the CMF will need to offer at least two distribution platforms, including TV, for projects to receive subsidies. Acceptable platforms include webisodes, interactive games and podcasts.

The CMF's early focus will be on funding dramas, comedy and kids programming.

"We want to foster the development of cutting-edge applications and content," Moore said, calling for an end to vested interests and primetime TV dominance in Canadian production financing.

Moore also said he wanted to see more Flashpoints -- domestic dramas that air on both sides of the border and which stream online.

The heritage minister urged that CMF-funded shows use "predominantly Canadian talent" including writers, directors and performers -- vague wording that portends a possible greater use of foreign talent in future productions.

Other surprises: the CBC will no longer receive a guaranteed envelope from the revamped fund. The pubcaster will be forced to compete with rival broadcasters for CMF financing. Broadcasters will also be able to produce their own series in-house.

The CMF will have a smaller, seven-member board: two government appointees and five representing the largest private funders in order to address earlier concerns about accountability and alleged conflicts of interest on the CTF board.

"The realigned fund will favor projects that have achieved and demonstrated the most potential to achieve success, in terms of audience and return on investment," Moore said of the new ratings-driven investment criteria.

Judging by the wide smiles on Rogers Communications' Phil Lind and Quebecor's Pierre Karl Peladeau at the press conference, the cable and satellite providers liked what they heard. Moore's fix promises them far more say over which homegrown shows receive CMF subsidies.

"It's pretty good news," Peladeau said Monday. "The industry will be more efficient."

It was threats in December 2006 by Quebecor-owner Videotron and rival cablecaster Shaw Communications to end their required CTF payments that first prompted Ottawa's review of the industry fund.

Stephen Waddell, national executive director of ACTRA, said giving cable and satellite operators control of five board seats is "like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse, especially if the board maintains the power to make funding decisions."

Moore said the CMF will be subject to guidelines -- funding decisions will be based on ratings as well as the seven-member board.

In opting for the CMF, Moore ignored a June 2008 CRTC recommendation that the CTF be split into dual funding streams, one for private networks and another for non-profit broadcasters.

The CTF and the Canada New Media Fund will remain in place until the CMF is up and running in April 2010.

We are sad to announce the sudden passing of Hal at his home on January 13^th 2009. Hal will be sadly missed by his brother Craig and sister Laurie. He will also be remembered by his nephews Chris, Jeff (Krystal), Mike and great nephew Devon. Predeceased by his sister Bonnie. As per Harold’s request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday January 24th 2009 at The Factory, 126 James Street North (between Wilson and Cannon) at 3 pm.

Hal was a great caricature artist, with the fastest hands. He inspired many of us to do caricatures to improve how we saw life, people and take in their character. He used to draw with these chisel point markettes, that you can't find anywhere, like Hal himself, a rare find.

This was Hal's class at NBCC Miramichi in 1997. Hal was instrumental in starting the program and getting the first batch of students out the door.

Hal as I remember him, summer of 2007 in Hamilton. Just happy to see each other after a good stretch of time. We had a good day, sharing some coffee, stories on animation, the industry, women, life.

I know I haven't seen you in awhile Hal, but I sure do miss you.
You had a massive influence on my life. You taught me to be creative, how to draw, hell, how to see; always inspiring me to push myself and challenge my way of thinking.

He drew so fast, I was in complete awe of his ability. A marvelous draftsman, I wanted so bad to be like him, setting my passion and desire for animation and design the moment I saw him touch pencil to paper. I remember him telling me to slow down and really concentrate on solid construction first and foremost. His words forever echo in my head

"Get good, then get fast"

Save some paper for me at the big light table in the sky.

SPACE KNIGHTS LIVE ACTION SHOOT GO!

Right about now (the funk soul brother) we're animating episode 1 of 2 on the good ship Space Knights for Teletoon's Detour uplift pilot program. Wee's got to thinkin about 3 months ago, "hell we've never done any live action mixed with our animation in ages!" So we thought it'd be fun to contact the Space Knights and see if they'd come over and shoot some extra footage for our pilots!

The lighting genius Mark Hemmings checks his blackberry more than you do.

So our delicious Fatkat writer, Brian Tucker kicked us out a few diddys, we passed them to our boys at Teletoon for a quick review and within a week we had our other boys at Hemmings House Pictures come up to shoot some Space Knight goodness. Here are some pics from last week's shoot.

We shot all four clips here at Fatkat, we're lucky we have a vast range of locations within our building that suited our objectives. Having a pub in the basement of the studio has more benefits then we originally plotted!

Our long time pal Tony Grillo down at Flinch Studio in Atlanta used to tell me that he wished he was Canadian. I bet that after the recent election this isn't so true anymore.

Being an American just got cool again, being Canadian means Amercians won't try to pass as us while travelling anymore. A win/win.

I was just thinking about it all, you know, what went down last night. It's monumental really. Not only did the Americans elect a true leader. They showed the world that they have officially crossed the racism border by electing a black man to the white house. It's a great time to be alive.

Hell I'm not even American but I get all emotional about it. It's quite something in my opinion. Makes me wish we had a true leader at the helm here in Canada, someone that inspires hope and shows the world what Canada truly is all about. A World Leader, someone like Barack Obama is what I think Canada is missing at the helm. Someone we can believe in.

Anyway, a great day, a great drawing!

One of the possibilities on the horizon is a little show we're doing with Eric and Norma from Mkids Entertainment from Montreal. Nicknamed "Lil' Mo'", the show showcases Arabian culture and stories with a modern twist.

Norma Denys is a veteran animation producer/director, anyone remember Turtle Island? Well, that was her! Her and one of her partners came down a few weeks ago and well, I just got around to posting pics cause, well I'm just busy.

Eric Mantion comes into the animation industry fresh, so they chose the right studio to help them along! This guy is alot of fun.

Speaking of alot of fun. EH!? WHAT?!

A small animation company has been attracted to the Miramichi from Ontario by the prospect of freelance work with FatKat Animation Studios, its founders say.

Black Willow Digital, a two-person company made up of two graduates from the animation program at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ont, moved to Miramichi in September.

One of the animators, Tim Martin, said the company initially planned to set up in Windsor, but the economy in that city was moving in another direction. They then applied to FatKat to do in-house freelance work on the studio's show "Three Delivery," and moved to Miramichi soon after to be "closer to the source."

He said Black Willow's dealings with FatKat had been good so far.

"They've been very helpful with everything we've asked, any advice we've needed," Martin said. "I would consider it a very good relationship."

He said he and his partner, Nicola Hartley, enjoy living in Miramichi, and plan to work with FatKat until the end of the current season of Three Delivery at least. If their relationship with FatKat ends, the two plan to look in Miramichi and the rest of the province for other contracts.

Jeff MacTavish, the city's economic development officer, said the fact that FatKat had attracted other animation companies was a sign it was doing well, despite an unfavourable tax credit system.

"They're getting so much work they have to subcontract it, so it's a very positive move," he said.

10 TIPS FOR ATTENDING CONFERENCES

Image is everything, be selective in business of whom you chose to reveal your innerself to.

Double check when travelling, don't assume it's been taken care of. Analyze everything you need to get to point B from point A and then return. Do you have your ticket? How are you getting to the airport, how are you getting to the hotel? Is it confirmed? Is it close the festival? - Cab bills can add up. If you're walking be sure you have comfortable shoes, you'll be on your feet all day. Be sure you plan out and double check all your transportation and accomodations.
There are reasons you should plan to show up to the airport 2 hours before your flight leaves. It's not as easy as just checking in and going through security or customs. Most of these reasons were totally unexpected as I experienced first hand recently. Flat tires, traffic jams, massive line ups, missing tickets, mistakes in booking and god knows what else could happen. Keep in mind that some airlines close the check in counter for some flights up to 45 minutes before boarding. If you're flying internationally it's even more important, because in my case recently I had to take 3 seperate flights to get to my destination, if you miss the first flight, you miss all the flights, and airlines such as Air Canada aren't forgiving or very helpful. You'll have to pay for new tickets and at full price on short notice. This could risk your entire investment into this trip. Thousands and thousands of dollars. Hell if your business is small enough, it could collapse your company if you don't have a back up plan that works. All because you didn't leave early enough. DO NOT LIVE BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS!
If you're bringing your laptop and you're in another country, be sure to have an international power adapter.
If you don't have a cell phone, get one; you need it, trust me. Register your number in the festival guide. It's so important for schedule conflicts and new appointments as well keeping in touch with your folks back at home. If you're in another country, get a calling card that you can program your phone with.
If you're not making your appointments with new companies, be sure you screen all the selections your assistants are making. The last thing you want is a day full of appointments with studios that are competing with you for service work. It's rarely, that you'll have anything to talk about.
Don't mix vacation with business. It's like oil and water, you need to concentrate on one or the other. During business trips you'll need the time between meetings and at night to prepare for the next day. Also, you'll be missing the cocktail parties; now if you drink, it's not important if you drink or not. But it's a great way to meet people, and this is what markets are all about. Keep business and pleasure seperate, plan to bring loved ones after or before the conferences or festivals. It'll be the same and you'll be refreshed and relaxed.
Be prepared to talk about your projects and your studios capabilities. Your proprietary projects if you're pitching them, should be professionally prepared and complete in the pitch. You'll need lots of artwork and if possible, an animated clip. Nothing sells a show like having an animated clip. Nothing.
When Scheduling meetings, double check the time and the exact location of the meeting. Even to the point of the physical description of the person you're meeting. Double check by sending an email but use that damn mobile phone or drop by their booth. Get in touch. Be sure. It is so embarrassing when you miss a meeting and it does nothing for your first impression. Do you think they'll want to do business with anyone who isn't punctual or has no concept of time? Forget about excuses. Be there, and double check. They'll be impressed if you do.
If you're looking for co-production partners or alliances treat your projects together seriously even if they're just initial talks and or spec' work gigs. If you accept a project, you accept everything to do with that project - no matter if it pays or not. You accept it like it was a paying gig. Do not miss deadlines, do not procrastinate. Get it done and do it with pride like it was any other production. I've made this mistake and will not again.
Be careful of your image at festivals. If you act like an idiot, getting obnoxiously drunk, yelling and generally fucking about at parties do you really think that your pre-school show that you're pitching the next day is going to be well received by a buyer that perhaps witnessed your spectacle the night before? Let's face it, Fatkats have alot of fun and pride themselves at being individuals to say the least. We drink, we tell jokes and pull pranks on people, hell we even gave out Fatkat condoms at this year's Mipcom! But we are selective of our targets at all times. We are respectful of our all our clients and alliances and you should as well. We wear Kustom Fatkat Hockey Jerseys at every event and conference. This isn't offensive it's smart, a great marketing tool that get us press and recognition. Taking your shirts off or getting shitfaced and dancing at tables get you the same, but it creates in my mind a negative impression or at the very least a limiting one. Be selective of whom you reveal yourself to. Be silly but not too silly, be serious but not too serious, but always be fun and show that you'd be professional and a blast to work with.

THE SPACE KNIGHTS OIAF TOUR 2008

The Space Knights have left their temporary layer here in New Brunswick and are venturing to the Ottawa International Animation Festival this year to help promote their new animated show on Teletoon. They're here, one's queer and they mean business!

They all stopped at this little joint outside of Montreal to try 32 types of poutine. It was a weirdo little restaurant that was quickly surrounded by evil Dinosaur transexuals. The Knights battled off the dirty dino's in keen fashion using monster trucks from a nearby monster truck rally. Go Space Knights!

I wanted to put up some samples of the new Space Knights for you guys. For those of you who don't know, it's the "other" show we're doing right now. Though I'm not sure how you wouldn't have known that... unless you're deaf and blind... I digress.

First up is the new Red Knight.

The bombastic leader. You can tell because he wears red and has a heroic voice. Like Brendan Fraser, he's tough yet approachable. Unlike Brendan Fraser, he's a big brother on weekends and teaches kara-tay at the local Y. Artistically all of the other knights look the same, just colored different.

And then we have Beyonda.

Beloved wifey of the Black Knight, Beyonda is best described as hot. Sure... loud-mouthed, bitchy, shrill, and irritating are probably more accurate, but who cares when she looks like that!

Last but most definitely not least, Croctopus!

This giant cross between a crocodile and a platypus is looking for love! He's a libra who enjoys long walks on the beach, getting caught in the rain, and timid woodland creatures. Unfortunately he only dates nines or tens, so he spends most of his time smashing things and yelling nonsense.

THE TOWN PANTS INVASION

The weekend before just, was the Miramichi Irish Festival, where loads of insane musicians invade the area rockin out bars and pubs. However one band in particular decided to take their venture to Miramichi a bit further and invade the Fatkat Studio as well.

The Town Pants searched all through the accounting department looking for our secret fatvault, they came up empty. In spite, they rearranged all of our files for us and proceeded downstairs to enhale all the beer in our fridge.

FOX INKUBATOR PROGRAM

Fox Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox Television are investing in a new animation initiative, Fox Inkubation, aimed at developing new animated series. Along with the program also comes the creation of a department that will focus entirely on animated projects.

Through "Inkubation," Fox will develop animated projects by starting them as short-form films rather than through traditional script development. From these shorts the department will create additional ones or even begin full program development. The initiative also could introduce digital distribution as part of its plan.

Former "South Park" supervising producer Jennifer Howell has been named senior vice president of animation and will be in charge of the new department. Senior VP of Production Marci Proietto will oversee the department's projects.

Ms. Howell will report to 20th Century Fox Television Co-Chairs Gary Newman and Dana Walden.

Fox's "The Simpsons," "King of the Hill" and "Family Guy" remain among the few staples in prime-time animated series.

Seth MacFarlane, creator of TV's Family Guy, will create an animation show for Google that will bring in ad revenue by distribution across the Internet. Called Set MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, the MacFarlane-Google deal portends a new model for entertainment that cuts out Hollywood and the TV networks.

In a move that should send "cold chills down the necks of broadcast network executives," Google will unveil this fall an Internet-only animation show from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.

The new program, to be released in September, is called Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, and it will appear exclusively on the Internet. But it won't be exclusive to Google. Rather, the search giant will exploit its AdSense advertising network to distribute MacFarlane's work across thousands of Web sites that attract the kinds of audiences likely to be interested in the show -- in a word, young audiences.

"The Internet is on track to become the dominant way video will eventually be distributed, and with it will come the ability for content Relevant Products/Services creators like Mr. MacFarlane to take his shows directly to the customer and reap the benefits directly, without sharing any of his profits with traditional broadcasters," said Tim Bajarin, principal analyst with Creative Strategies, in an e-mail.

Cutting Hollywood Out

Unlike previous Internet efforts to enter the entertainment business -- notably former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel's many agreements with Hollywood studios -- Google's deal cuts out the movie studios and television networks that have to date controlled top-quality content.

By going directly to a creative leader with an established reputation and a built-in audience comfortable with computers, Google is defining a future of entertainment that doesn't include the age-old "suits," producers and moneymen. Entertainment Hollywood-style could be replaced by Silicon Valley project managers.

The New York Times reports that the MacFarlane program will run as 50 two-minute episodes (possibly the optimum viewing time for the Internet), supported by a range of advertising formats, including "preroll" ads that run before the program, banner ads and text messages. MacFarlane describes the episodes as "animated versions of the one-frame cartoons you might see in The New Yorker, only edgier."

Revenue 'Formidable'

MacFarlane will get a cut of the advertising revenue, as well as the ability to animate online commercials for substantial fees. The show is unique in Internet circles because it will be produced with a million-dollar budget -- not the typical six-figure budgets for Internet programming. That's possible because of the involvement of Media Rights Capital, a production company with the ability to invest $400 million a year in content production.

"We believe the revenue could be formidable," Karl Austen, a lawyer who worked on the deal, told the Times. "What is exciting is that this is a way to monetize the Internet immediately. Instead of creating a Web site and hoping Seth's fans find it, we are going to push the content to where people are already at."

Another benefit for MacFarlane: Internet programming is not governed by the Federal Communications Commission, which has strictly penalized broadcasters in recent years. MacFarlane told the Times that the public wants more raunchy humor and television networks are being stymied by the "taste police."

"I just felt I could be a lot more honest on the Internet," he said.

Given that younger users are increasingly online, that the Net is free from FCC oversight, and that Google's model charges advertisers only when their messages are viewed, "PCs and digital set-top boxes will become the front end for delivering interactive media of all types to the living room," Bajarin said. "Companies like Google are bound to become the major networks of this new century."

It's 2am and for the xth straight night I'm planning my next day. I figger, if I work for another 4 hours, I can finish the 8th cut scene and perhaps key out the final scene as well. If I'm lucky and concentrate, meaning stop gliding off onto the net, making blogposts and seeing what's up on Facebook. Then I might be able to go back to the second cut scene and fix up those keys I don't like.

When the clock strikes 6, I'll try catch my forty. If my son doesn't wake me, I'll sleep a good 5 or 6 hours, waking at noon. Take an hour to give the boys a scrub, grab some lunch, play with Gavin, give the wife a kiss, go to town, get a hair cut and then meet the suits at the studio for 2pm.

and uhm, why am I telling you this? Well, it's so you know of course.

For the last week or so I've been at home working on an animated intro for our Mr.Banks show. Really tough, but alot of fun and very rewarding. Upon first past of the animatic, I sent it into the studio for some crew feedback, lots of fantastic suggestions! - Many I've implemented and you'll see when all is done.

The premiere of Three Delivery on Friday at 730p “was one of the highest rated” original series premiere “ever” .

The show rated very well with Kids 6-11, and also with Girls 6-11. It beat the average time slot for that period from the past month, and it rated higher than its lead in show.

It was the highest rated Nicktoons original premiere with Girls. It also did very well with Tweens9-14.

HOW TO GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING

Search the internet for "free stuff." You'll find Web sites that index online freebies from manufacturers and retailers.
Arrive at rummage sales, garage sales, flea markets, farmers markets and library book sales an hour before closing to find drastically reduced prices or freebies.
Shop the nurseries at jumbo retailers in the autumn. Some stores give away dormant perennials (if they don't know better) that will re-bloom in the spring.
Become a mystery shopper or participate in survey groups to get free meals, products or services and, possibly, even a paycheck. Search online to find opportunities in your area.

With 3 You Get Egg Roll and a Side of Adventure

“Three Delivery” is a great-looking new prime-time cartoon on the Nicktoons network. Set in Chinatown in San Francisco, it features three young orphans who save the world nightly while delivering food for their adoptive Nana’s restaurant, Wu’s Garden. The action takes place after dark, and the animation is a riot of reds, greens and yellows: neon signs, rampaging dragons, rivers of hot-and-sour soup.

The show’s premise may prove limiting — the heroes must scurry around Chinatown gathering dangerous recipes once bound in a magical cookbook but set free years ago by the evil apprentice chef Kong Li — and the first two episodes already show some strain when it comes to keeping the narrative fresh. But the children the show is aimed at may not mind as long as the bicycle crashes and kung fu battles are sufficiently spectacular.

What struck this adult fan of Asian pop culture the most about “Three Delivery,” however, wasn’t the show’s quality. It was how little its Asian-ness, or Asian-American-ness, mattered. The loving, retro Chinatown backgrounds; the in-jokes (Shun Lee Park, playing off the New York restaurant; the villain’s name, pronounced Gong Li like the Chinese actress); the visual puns (during an earthquake, a restaurant worker juggles stacks of plates and bamboo steamers like a Peking acrobat) — they all say Asia, but nothing in the show feels like Asia. The overall effect is somewhere between “Flower Drum Song” and “Scooby-Doo.”

That’s an observation, not a criticism. (Another observation: The show’s nearly 30 producers, directors, writers and editors don’t include a single recognizably Asian name.) At the same time, though, there are any number of American cartoons, from “The Powerpuff Girls” to “SpongeBob SquarePants” to the one true American anime, “The Boondocks,” that show a love for the style and rhythms of Asian animation without being fanboy simulacrums of Asian culture.

Forget the fact that they're getting back together, or that their now aging fan base can't even pick up the frequency in which they sing. The Bee Gees are great. However better Bg's can be found in the walls of Fatkat on Three Delivery.
